This is precisely where most mistakes occur in practice: excessively long lighting periods, too much power for too small tanks, or a lighting setup that suits neither the plants nor the inhabitants. Good lighting is not an end in itself. It must match the aquarium, the planting, and the maintenance effort.
Optimizing Aquarium Lighting - What Really Matters
The correct setting is not just about how many hours the light should be on. Three factors are always crucial together: lighting duration, intensity, and light distribution. Only when these points are in harmony will a tank run stably.
A lightly planted community aquarium usually functions with a different light level than a heavily planted aquascape. The tank depth also plays a role. A shallow nano aquarium requires significantly less light output than a tall plant tank with carpeting plants. Therefore, simply installing the strongest possible light often creates more problems than advantages.
The inhabitants also matter. Many fish do not like bright, continuous lighting, especially species from heavily vegetated or shady habitats. Plants need light, while fish often prefer areas for retreat and rest. Optimal lighting is therefore only achieved when both are balanced.
The Appropriate Lighting Duration in the Aquarium
For most freshwater aquariums, a daily lighting period of 6 to 8 hours is a sensible starting point. For newly set up tanks, less is often more. During the cycling phase, plants are not yet fully established, while algae quickly utilize free nutrients. How Strong Should the Lighting Be?
The light intensity must match its intended use. For simple tanks with robust plants like Anubias, Java fern, or mosses, moderate lighting is usually sufficient. More demanding stem plants, red plants, or carpeting plants require significantly more light – but only if CO2 and fertilization can keep up.
This is precisely where planning often goes wrong. Strong light looks attractive at first but increases the pressure on the entire system. Plants consume more nutrients and more CO2 under high lighting. If the supply falls short, deficiencies arise. Algae immediately exploit these weaknesses.
In practice, it is better to start moderately and increase as needed than to work with maximum intensity from the beginning. Many LED lights can be dimmed or adjusted via controllers. This is particularly useful because new tanks behave differently from long-established systems.
In deep aquariums, light penetration is more important than in shallow tanks. High water levels, dense floating plant growth, or wide covers further alter how much light actually reaches the bottom. Therefore, the ideal setting can never be judged solely by a wattage or lumen specification.
Correctly Classifying Light Color and Spectrum
Light color is often overestimated, but it should not be completely ignored. For most freshwater aquariums, neutral white to daylight-like spectra work very well. They provide natural color rendition, support plant growth, and make the tank appear balanced overall.
Extremely cold or strongly colored light can be optically interesting, but it is not automatically better. Blue-heavy effects look modern but do not suit every inhabitant and not every design. For sales tanks or show tanks, this may be sensible depending on the goal, but in everyday life, natural, even lighting is often the better solution.
If the red and green tones of the plants are to be emphasized, it is worth looking at the light's spectrum. Nevertheless, here too: the best spectrum does not replace stable overall care. Healthy plants do not result from marketing terms but from coordinated light, CO2, nutrients, and regular care.
Optimizing Aquarium Lighting for New and Running Tanks
A new aquarium should be illuminated cautiously. Starting with 6 hours at reduced intensity is often sensible. After the first two to four weeks, it can be gradually increased if plants are visibly growing and no significant algae problems occur. Small adjustments are better than large leaps.
In running tanks, the situation is different. If plants are growing compactly, no significant algae are appearing, and the animals show calm behavior, there is often no need for action. Many problems only arise because multiple parameters are adjusted simultaneously without a clear reason.
If you still want to optimize, you should only change one factor at a time – either the duration or the intensity. If both values are increased or reduced simultaneously, it becomes almost impossible to clearly discern what actually brought an improvement.
Typical Lighting Mistakes
A common mistake is the assumption that more light automatically means more plant growth. This is only true if the rest of the system also grows with it. Without CO2 and appropriate fertilization, strong light quickly becomes an algae accelerator.
Equally problematic is excessively long lighting periods in sparsely planted tanks. Especially in simple community aquariums, 7 to 8 hours are often completely sufficient. If you are significantly above that, you should critically review the duration.
Uneven illumination is also underestimated. If edge areas remain dark or tall decorations cast large shadows, plants grow very differently. Then, more power is not necessarily the solution, but rather a better-suited light length or different positioning.
Another point is the combination of cover and light. Not every lighting technically and functionally suits every aquarium format. For custom sizes, panoramic tanks, or shallow designer tanks, a solution tailored to the dimensions and use is therefore worthwhile. This is where the difference between just any lamp and truly suitable lighting becomes apparent.
How to Find the Right Setting for Your Tank
The most sensible approach is a clear practical test over several weeks. Start with moderate duration and medium intensity. Then observe plant growth, algae development, and the behavior of the fish. If plants grow stably, leaves remain healthy, and algae do not increase, the direction is usually correct.
If plants remain stunted despite fertilization and CO2, a little more light may be beneficial. If, however, hair algae, green film on surfaces, or stressed-looking fish appear, the lighting should rather be reduced or better distributed. Not every symptom is unambiguous, but in many cases, the aquarium clearly shows whether the light suits the rest of the system.
For beginners, a well-controllable setup is usually the best choice. Dimming function, timer, and power matched to the tank size make fine-tuning significantly easier.
