A tank between the living and dining areas is not just decoration. It becomes part of the decor, defines sightlines, and therefore must be carefully planned in terms of dimensions, sub-structure, technology, and inhabitants.
What a room divider aquarium must achieve
A room divider tank stands freely or is integrated into furniture, a wall opening, or a low protrusion. Unlike a classic wall-mounted aquarium, it usually has two long sides that can be viewed. The design must therefore work from both sides. Background films, technical shafts, and tall decorations cannot simply disappear behind the back pane.
The appropriate size is first determined by the room's effect. An aquarium that is too tall can visually close off an open space and make the room appear heavier. A tank that is too low, on the other hand, loses its function as a dividing element. In many living situations, a total height of between approximately 120 and 150 centimeters, including the base cabinet and aquarium, proves effective. This allows for a view over the tank, while clearly separating the living and dining areas.
The length is based on the desired room edge. For example, if the aquarium is to frame a 180-centimeter-wide passageway, a tank between 160 and 180 centimeters in length may be suitable. Regarding depth: it determines not only the water volume but also the design possibilities. From 50 to 60 centimeters depth, convincing perspectives for plants, roots, and stones emerge. For demanding aquascapes or large fish, 70 centimeters and more are often advisable.

A practical example is an aquarium measuring 160 x 60 x 60 centimeters. The tank has a gross volume of approximately 576 liters and stands on a precisely fitting base cabinet with a height of 80 centimeters. Together, this results in a system of about 140 centimeters. It separates a living area from the dining area without completely closing off the room.
Both long panes remain freely visible. On one narrow end, there is a covered technical area that accommodates filter inlets and outlets, heaters, and cables. This keeps the visible setup clean. A second, narrow end can serve as a service access point if the aquarium is not accessible from all sides.
With this format, planting can be structured in three levels: low plants in the foreground, structural roots and stones in the middle, and taller stem plants or solitary plants as visual screens. It is important not to block the center with a continuous wall of hardscape. A staggered arrangement with clear views works better. This way, each side has its own perspective, while the tank remains cohesive as a whole.
For a peaceful community setup, the volume offers sufficient scope, for example, for a larger school of small tetras or barbs, peaceful bottom fish, and a few selected eye-catchers. Those planning larger cichlids, discus fish, or special biotope setups must coordinate tank height, filter performance, water parameters, and hiding places much more precisely with the species. The desired animal always takes precedence over purely aesthetic planning.
Do not choose dimensions based solely on available space
Before ordering, not only the niche or the imagined room line should be measured. Transport routes, doors, stairwells, elevators, and later access to the aquarium are also crucial. An 180-centimeter-long tank might fit into the room but not through the stairwell. For large custom-made items, delivery must therefore be considered from the outset.
Equally important is the floor load. A 576-liter tank, as in the example, weighs well over 700 kilograms with glass, base cabinet, substrate, decoration, and water. While this load is distributed over the footprint, it should be checked for sensitive floors, old buildings, or elevated floors. A flat, load-bearing surface is mandatory. Nothing must yield or exert pinpoint pressure under the base cabinet.
Maintenance also requires space. Sufficient room should be left between the aquarium and the wall or furniture edge to clean panes, check hoses, and remove decoration if necessary. With a removable cover or an open system, there must be enough clearance above. Those who only notice these points after installation make regular maintenance unnecessarily difficult.
Technology for a clean view from two sides
In a room divider, every visible line is more noticeable than in a wall-mounted tank. The technology should therefore either be housed in a side shaft, in the base cabinet, or as inconspicuously as possible along one end. A powerful external filter is a good solution for many systems, as little technology remains visible in the tank itself. For larger or particularly demanding systems, a sump in the base cabinet can be useful, provided that the drain, emergency overflow, and maintenance access are professionally planned.
Filter performance is not only determined by the liter value. A heavily planted community tank has different requirements than a tank with large, heavily feeding fish. As a guide, the circulation should be sufficient to prevent stagnant zones, without fish and plants being permanently exposed to strong currents. The outflow can be effectively routed along the longitudinal axis in room dividers.
For lighting, the tank width is crucial. A 60-centimeter-deep aquarium needs a light that also adequately reaches the foreground and middle ground. For densely planted layouts, high-quality LED lights with coordinated light output and timers are practical. For easy-care plantings, more moderate lighting is often sufficient. More light does not automatically mean a better aquarium – without proper fertilization, CO2 supply, and care, the risk of algae primarily increases.
A cover reduces evaporation, keeps fish securely in the tank, and protects against dust. An open aquarium appears lighter and allows roots or emersed growing plants to be more prominent. However, it requires more attention to water level, humidity, and the selection of fish species prone to jumping.
Design: Convincing from both sides
A room divider tank must not have a distinct front and back. This is the central design challenge. Instead of a tall plant wall, an island setup, slightly offset from the center, is suitable. Roots can branch out in different directions, while open sand areas or low ground covers create depth.
Strong sightlines are particularly well maintained if tall plants are not placed exactly in the center. A group on one side, a lower structure on the opposite side, and an open area in between bring movement to the layout. For a natural effect, stones and roots should not be distributed symmetrically. Symmetry quickly appears artificial in a freestanding aquarium.
If you want to structure the room more visually, you can use a taller plant group as a green partial wall. This fits, for example, between the sofa and the dining table. If the room is to remain open, lower hardscape lines and individual solitary plants are the better choice. The desired transparency therefore determines the planting, not just personal taste.
Configuring custom-made items sensibly
For a custom-made aquarium, length, depth, height, glass thickness, cover, base cabinet, and technical preparation can be adapted to the location. Particularly helpful are side technical shafts, prepared drillings for a sump, cut-outs for cables and hoses, or a suitable base cabinet with sufficiently large maintenance doors.
Not every special solution is automatically sensible. An extremely tall tank complicates maintenance, while a very narrow, long aquarium offers too little usable depth for many fish species. A fully glazed construction is also not always the best choice if one end already borders a piece of furniture and can be used for technology. Good planning means investing where it truly improves everyday life, safety, and aesthetics.
