The short answer is not simply "one is better". The decisive factors are tank size, stocking, maintenance effort, placement, and the aesthetic demands on the tank.
Especially with filter selection, it becomes clear whether technology works well in everyday life or causes problems later. A filter should not only move water but also absorb dirt, work biologically stable, and be reasonably maintainable. This is particularly noticeable in everyday life for community tanks with higher stocking, larger aquascapes, or aquariums with a bit more food input.
Maintenance intervals are also often more relaxed. A well-dimensioned external filter does not have to be opened constantly. This saves time and keeps the filter biology calmer. Anyone who doesn't want to deal with the technology every week sees this as a real advantage.
Of course, the external filter also has its limitations. It requires space outside the aquarium, usually costs more, and installation is more complex. Hoses, intake, and outlet must be planned sensibly. In small aquariums, this is sometimes oversized or simply impractical.

For very small tanks, an internal filter is often the more sensible solution. Not because an external filter is fundamentally unsuitable, but because the effort and benefit often no longer align. Disturbing noises often arise more from incorrect installation, dirty rotors, air in the system, or unfavorably routed hoses. Quality and correct installation are more important here than the pure design.
Regarding power consumption, it's worth looking at the actual pump performance. A small internal filter can be more economical, but an efficient external filter can also be. Since filters run continuously, differences add up over the year. Especially with multiple tanks or large systems, this is not negligible.
Regarding operational safety: Both systems work reliably if they are selected appropriately and installed correctly. If the aquarium is larger, should appear visually calmer, or requires more filter performance and maintenance reserve, an external filter is often the better investment. Especially for permanently established tanks, the larger volume pays off in everyday life.
Anyone who wants to choose technology not just to operate it somehow, but to suit the tank, should always see the filter as part of the overall system – together with tank size, stocking, setup, and maintenance goal. Exactly then, a mere purchase decision becomes a solution that works long-term.
