The most important question is not initially which fish should move in, but where the tank will permanently stand. A small nano aquarium seems harmless, but with water, substrate, stones, and technology, it already puts noticeable weight on the surface. With larger tanks, this very quickly becomes a load that seriously challenges furniture, flooring, and room planning.
As a rough guide: one liter of water corresponds to approximately one kilogram. In addition, there is glass, cover, hardscape, base cabinet, and accessories. A 180-liter aquarium, ready for operation, therefore does not weigh 180 kg, but often more like 250 to 300 kg. With 300 liters and more, one is moving in a range where the location should be examined much more closely.
Before purchasing, three points are therefore crucial: Does the size really fit the intended space, does the substructure reliably bear the total weight, and is there enough space for maintenance and technology? Especially the last point is often overlooked. If the tank is placed flush in a niche, there may later be no space for external filter hoses, cables, maintenance, or a proper cover.
The Right Location in the Room
A good location is quiet, level, and consistently predictable. The aquarium should not be placed where doors are constantly slamming, children bump into it, or walkways become narrow. Vibrations are not a theoretical problem. They stress bonding, stress animals, and make maintenance unnecessarily cumbersome.

Realistically Assessing Load Capacity and Floor
Many aquarists wonder if the floor will support the tank. The honest answer is: it depends on the size, the construction of the building, and the exact position. In most living spaces, common aquarium sizes are not a problem, as long as the load is distributed sensibly. For very large installations, special formats, or older buildings, one should look more closely.
A location next to load-bearing walls or in areas where the floor is structurally stable is favorable. Free-standing old floorboards, unstable platforms, or furniture never intended for point loads are more critical. Important: Unevenness is usually compensated for under the base cabinet, not under individual points of the aquarium. Shimming only one corner may create precisely the tension that later becomes a problem. For uneven floors, a clean, full-surface solution is needed.
Depending on the tank type, a suitable underlay mat should also be placed between the aquarium and the support surface. Whether this is sensible or required depends on the construction and manufacturer's specifications. One should not act indiscriminately here. A tank with a frame has different requirements than a full-surface glass tank.
Plan for Space for Technology and Maintenance
A safely set up aquarium is not only structurally sound but also maintenance-friendly. If the location is planned too tightly, every water change becomes unnecessarily difficult. Space is needed above the tank to work in the tank, prune plants, or remove technology.

Equally critical is trusting any piece of furniture. What holds dishes or books in everyday life is not automatically suitable for several hundred kilograms under continuous load. Moisture, condensation, and cleaning work exacerbate this even further.
Another classic is the misjudgment of window light. Initially, a bright spot seems attractive; after a few weeks, one struggles with algae, temperature peaks, and fluctuating conditions. This is not a must, but a typical risk.
And finally, future maintenance is often underestimated. If the bucket only laboriously reaches the tank, power outlets are inconveniently located, or the lid cannot be fully opened, it's not just annoying - it also increases the risk with every routine task.
Different Standards Apply to Small and Large Tanks
A 30- or 60-liter tank is a bit more forgiving in terms of location selection, as long as the basic rules are followed. For 250 liters, 450 liters, or even larger systems, things are different. Then weight, leverage, costs, and consequential damages increase significantly.
The larger the aquarium, the more sensible it is to not only consider the tank in isolation but the entire system. This includes the base cabinet, cover, technology, access for maintenance, paths in the apartment, and the question of how the aquarium can even be safely brought to its place.
