Both variants have a similar volume but place different demands on light reach, flow, and furnishings.

For covers, glass lids, and clip-on lights, the outer edge is crucial. Therefore, measure not only the glass tank itself but also existing bracing, the frame, and the distance to the wall. A densely planted community aquarium with moderate stock needs something different than a tank with larger, food-intensive fish. An aquarium with a lot of hardscape can also change water circulation. Roots, stones, and dense plant zones create areas that are poorly reached by the flow. In this case, a significantly stronger filter doesn't automatically help. Often, it's better to reposition the outlet or to work with an additional, gentle flow.

An internal filter saves space outside the aquarium and is a practical choice for many smaller tanks. However, it requires space within the tank and can be visually disruptive in very densely designed aquascapes. An external filter usually offers more filter volume and can be used well for medium to large aquariums. However, hose guides, space in the base cabinet, and the head height must be suitable.

The Hamburg mat filter is particularly uncomplicated and offers a large biological filter surface. It fits well with certain breeding and shrimp tanks but requires a sensibly planned position. For subsequent installation in an already established tank, redesigning can be more complex.

The connection is also important: hose diameter and intake pipe must match the filter. Adapters can help, but they are always an additional connection point. The fewer unnecessary transitions there are, the easier the system remains sealed and maintainable.

Lighting: Length alone is not enough

For aquarium lighting, tank length is the first filter. A light should illuminate the tank as evenly as possible without creating large shaded areas at the edges. For open aquariums, clip-on lights, pendant lights, or lights with brackets are common. Check in advance whether the bracket fits the glass thickness and any existing bracing.

The light output depends on the tank's purpose. An easy-to-maintain aquarium with undemanding plants requires significantly less light than a densely planted aquascape with carpeting plants and red stem plants. More light can promote plant growth but also increases the need for nutrients and, if necessary, CO2. If this balance is not created, algae are often the result.

In tall tanks, a short or weak light sometimes doesn't reach the lower plant areas. Conversely, a very powerful light over a shallow tank can introduce unnecessarily much energy. Dimmable models offer flexibility here, provided that the control, power supply, and, if necessary, timer technology are compatible with each other.

Properly coordinate heater and temperature control

A heater must not only match the water volume but also the installation location. An aquarium in a warm living room needs less heating power than a tank in a cool hallway or basement. Large temperature differences in the room, drafts, and an open tank increase heat loss.

The heater should be fully submersible, provided the model is designed for it, and placed in a well-circulated area. This ensures even heat distribution. Behind a dense root or in a low-flow corner, temperature differences can occur even if the heater is working correctly.

For larger systems or temperature-sensitive animals, a separate thermometer is essential. Do not rely solely on the heater's scale. For special applications, such as species that need to be kept very warm or in breeding facilities, external temperature control may be useful. In this case, the plug type, switching capacity, and moisture protection must match.

Do not plan cover, base cabinet, and safety separately

Covers do more than just provide an aesthetic function. They reduce evaporation, keep jumping fish in the aquarium, and protect lights and the surroundings from splashing water. At the same time, they influence heat development. A closed cover can become problematic in summer if lighting and room temperature further heat the water.

When choosing a cover, pay attention to the exact outer dimensions and to cutouts for filters, hoses, and cables. Not every universal cover can be neatly combined with an external filter or a clip-on light. For custom-made aquariums, a matching cover is often the safest and most aesthetically pleasing choice.

The base cabinet must support the weight of the fully equipped aquarium. Do not only account for the water volume. Glass, substrate, stones, roots, and technology significantly increase the total weight. A 200-liter tank, when set up, can quickly weigh well over 250 kilograms. The support surface must be level, the cabinet must not warp, and the aquarium should rest fully on it according to the manufacturer's specifications.

For furniture with internal compartments, planning the technology is also relevant. External filters, CO2 cylinders, and power strips need space. Cables and hoses must not be kinked. A drip loop on every cable prevents water from running along the cable into the socket.

Consider CO2, substrate, and hardscape as a system

A CO2 system is usually purchased for plant growth. However, it is only compatible if it matches the light intensity, plant stock, and tank size. A pressurized gas cylinder requires a suitable pressure reducer, a solenoid valve, and a diffuser or reactor suitable for aquariums. The hose size should also be correct so that connections remain tight.

For small aquariums, bio-CO2 solutions can be an option, while for larger or densely planted tanks, a controllable pressurized gas system is usually more manageable. Control remains crucial: a CO2 permanent test helps with orientation but does not replace observing fish and shrimp.

Substrate and hardscape also influence the technology. Tall rock structures can break currents, heavy stones require a secure base, and nutrient-rich soil substrates often change water parameters during the cycling phase. Those who want to keep sensitive animals should check whether rocks or substrate can affect hardness and pH value.

Before purchasing, a brief planning with the actual tank data helps. Note down external dimensions, glass thickness, water level, ambient temperature, and existing technology. Also, consider what will be added later. Those who start with a simple planted tank but plan an aquascape in the medium term should not choose lighting and filters too sparingly. Conversely, oversized technology in a quiet shrimp tank does not automatically yield better results. Too much flow can stress animals and stir up fine substrate.
