Choosing the right sand or gravel for your aquarium

The decision for sand or gravel in the aquarium should ideally not be based on aesthetics alone. The substrate influences how well plants root, whether bottom-dwelling fish can exhibit their natural behavior, how easily mulm can be removed, and the overall impression of the tank. A bright sand tank can look calm and open, while dark gravel enhances contrasts in plants, shrimp, and hardscape. However, the crucial factors are always: Which animals and plants are to be introduced, how will the aquarium be maintained, and what design is planned?
Sand or Gravel in the Aquarium: The Most Important Differences
Sand consists of very fine grains, usually with a grain size of about 0.4 to 1.2 millimeters. Gravel is significantly coarser and is offered in various grain sizes depending on the product, often between 1 and 3 millimeters or 2 and 4 millimeters. This seemingly small difference significantly changes the properties of the substrate.
With sand, food tends to remain on the surface. This is practical for many bottom-dwelling fish, as they quickly find their food and can thoroughly search the area. At the same time, mulm sinks less deeply. It lies visibly on the sand and can be specifically siphoned off during a water change. Anyone who maintains a tank properly has good control over deposits.
Gravel allows water and fine dirt particles to penetrate more easily between the grains. This can have a positive effect on the flow within the substrate, but it also means that mulm disappears visually faster and sits deeper. When siphoning, the gravel vacuum should therefore be guided lightly into the gravel. If maintenance is too infrequent or too much is fed, larger amounts of organic material can accumulate in coarse gravel.
The choice is not just about sand versus gravel. Color, grain size, material, and layer thickness must also match the inhabitants and the setup. A sharp-edged decorative gravel, for example, is unsuitable for sensitive barbels, even if the grain size would fundamentally be appropriate.
When Sand is the Better Choice
Sand is particularly suitable when fish actively search the substrate, root around, or partially burrow. Corydoras catfish, many loaches, spiny eels, and numerous cichlids benefit from fine, rounded sand. Corydoras take sand into their mouths and filter it out again. Their sensitive barbels can be damaged on sharp or coarse gravel.
Sand also looks convincing in aquariums with a natural riverbank or biotope character. Light sand surfaces make roots, stones, and individual plant groups stand out more clearly. For aquascapes, sand is often used to create paths, riparian zones, or open foreground areas. It doesn't have to cover the entire bottom. A combination of planted substrate in the background and an open sand area in the foreground is often particularly functional.
With sand, the right layer is crucial. For a classic community aquarium, about three to five centimeters are sufficient in many cases. Very high sand layers can compact in poorly circulated areas. This can lead to oxygen-depleted zones. This is not automatically a problem, but it should be avoided with deep substrates, little maintenance, and heavy stocking.
Plants also grow reliably in sand if their nutrient supply is adequate. Pure sands generally contain few nutrients. Heavily feeding root plants such as Cryptocorynes, Echinodorus, or Vallisneria therefore benefit from a nutrient-rich substrate, fertilizer balls, or targeted root fertilizer. Stem plants absorb many nutrients through their leaves and are less dependent on the substrate.
A possible disadvantage: Very fine, light sand quickly shows dark mulm. This is not a quality defect, but rather makes maintenance needs visible. Anyone who performs weekly partial water changes and siphons off open areas can easily keep a sand tank clean.
When Gravel is More Sensible in the Aquarium
Gravel is a good choice for planted community aquariums where many plants are planted, moved, and combined. The coarser structure provides support for plant roots and facilitates the introduction of nutrient substrate or substrate fertilizer. Especially for medium to large root plants, suitable planting gravel can significantly simplify the work.
For beginners, fine to medium natural gravel with rounded grains is often an uncomplicated compromise. It looks natural, is available in many colors, and can be combined in many ways with stones, roots, and backgrounds. Dark gravel often makes green plants appear more vibrant and visibly reduces the impression of mulm. Light gravel can make small aquariums appear visually larger, but it also reflects more light.
Not every gravel is suitable for every aquarium. Very coarse varieties with large gaps are more susceptible to small food residues and fine mulm. For a typical freshwater aquarium, a grain size of about one to three millimeters is often well manageable. It provides support for plants, remains pleasant for most inhabitants, and can be effectively cleaned during water changes.
Gravel is also popular in shrimp tanks because mosses, epiphytes, small roots, and fine hardscape structures are well displayed on it. For the shrimp themselves, the grain size is usually less critical than stable water parameters, suitable furnishings, and an easily accessible surface for grazing. Very dark substrate can, however, alter the visual effect of colorful shrimp. Here it is worthwhile to plan the stocking and design together.
The Stocking Decides More Than Taste
Appearance is important, but the stocking sets the limits. If you want to keep corydoras, spiny eels, or rooting cichlids, you should prefer fine, rounded sand. For a densely planted community tank without sensitive bottom-dwelling fish, fine gravel is often a practical solution. In an aquascape, both can be useful: nutrient-rich planting substrate in planted zones, gravel as a structuring surface, and sand for open paths or riparian areas.
For fish that like to dig, the setup should also be stable. Heavy stones, roots, or caves belong directly on the aquarium base plate or on a suitable protective underlay, not loosely on a high layer of sand. If a fish digs under a stone, the decoration must not sink or tip over.
Water parameters can also play a role. Some light natural gravels contain calcareous components and can affect water hardness. For soft water fish, Caridina shrimp, or sensitive plants, a substrate declared as water-neutral is the safe choice. Before purchasing, it should always be checked whether the material is suitable for freshwater and what effect the manufacturer states.
Planning Grain Size, Color, and Quantity Correctly
The appropriate amount depends on the base area, desired layer thickness, and design. In a shallowly designed community tank, a uniform layer is sufficient. In a planted setup, the substrate may rise towards the back to create depth and provide tall plants with sufficient root space. Five to eight centimeters in the back area are useful for many layouts, while two to four centimeters are often sufficient in the foreground.
A simple guideline is: the more densely the tank is planted, the more important sufficient height and nutrient supply in the root area become. Open sand areas, on the other hand, should not be unnecessarily deep. They are then easier to keep clean and remain visually clear.
Color is not just a matter of taste. Very light substrate can make shy fish appear more restless, while a natural brown or dark substrate provides many species with more security. This depends on lighting, planting, and fish species. A dark background, dark substrate, and densely planted edge zones, for example, result in a calm overall picture for many tetras, barbs, and dwarf cichlids.
Before filling, sand or gravel should be thoroughly washed until the rinse water remains largely clear. This prevents excessive turbidity at the start. Then the substrate is carefully introduced, the decoration is set up stably, and the water is slowly filled over a plate, bag, or shallow bowl. This preserves the desired structure.
Maintenance: What's Different with Sand and Gravel
With sand, mulm is primarily siphoned from the surface. The hose should be guided just above the substrate so that as little sand as possible is sucked up. With gravel, the gravel vacuum may lightly penetrate so that embedded residues loosen. In densely planted areas, restraint is advisable: roots can spread there, and not every area needs to be deeply cleaned with every water change.
Overfeeding is the most common cause of dirty substrate for both variants. Food quantity, stocking density, and water change rhythm must match. Anyone who has these points under control can maintain sand as durably as gravel.
