An aquarium without a cover noticeably loses water – especially with high room temperatures, an open base cabinet, and powerful lighting. Anyone wondering which cover is suitable for preventing evaporation in an aquarium should not only look at the material. Tank size, lighting, filter routing, heat development, and the inhabitants also determine whether a cover truly fits into daily use.
A good solution significantly reduces water loss, keeps dust and jumping fish out of the tank, and can maintain a more stable temperature in the aquarium. At the same time, it must not completely block gas exchange or unnecessarily complicate maintenance. The best cover is therefore always the one that perfectly matches the aquarium and the technology used.
Why does aquarium water evaporate at all?
Evaporation occurs on every free water surface. The warmer the water and the ambient air, the more moisture is transferred into the room. Strong surface movement from filter outlets, powerheads, or air stones also increases evaporation. In open aquariums, the water level can visibly drop within a few days, depending on the tank size and season.
This is not just an aesthetic issue. When refilling, some of the lime dissolved in tap water remains in the tank. This can lead to a long-term increase in general hardness and conductivity if larger quantities of evaporated water are regularly replaced with untreated tap water. For many community aquariums, this is manageable, but for sensitive soft water fish, shrimp, or demanding aquascapes, water loss should be particularly monitored.
A cover does not replace proper maintenance. It reduces evaporation but does not prevent it 100 percent. Small openings for hoses and cables, as well as the necessary air exchange, still cause some moisture loss.
Which cover is useful for preventing evaporation in an aquarium
For most rectangular freshwater aquariums, glass covers are the practical standard solution. They rest on existing support ledges or are inserted into suitable holders. Aquariums with frames often already have a resting surface. It is important to measure the actual internal dimensions: not the external dimensions of the aquarium, but the area on which the pane rests is crucial.
Glass covers: clear, durable, and easy to clean
Glass retains heat and moisture well in the tank and reliably reduces evaporation. It remains optically inconspicuous, does not warp with normal use, and is easy to clean with an algae or glass scraper. For planted aquariums, a clear glass pane is usually a good choice because it hardly alters the light from the illumination.
With glass, the edge processing must be correct. Ground or polished edges reduce the risk of injury during maintenance work. Cut-outs for filter pipes, hoses, and cables, or a split design with multiple panes, are practical. This allows one side to be opened for feeding and maintenance without removing the entire cover.
Condensation should be noted. Drops form on the underside of a glass cover, which can slightly reduce light. With clean glass, this usually hardly matters in a normal community tank. In strongly lit aquascapes, however, the pane should be cleaned regularly so that plants receive sufficient light.
Plastic sheets: lightweight, but not always dimensionally stable long-term
Acrylic glass, PETG, or polycarbonate are lighter than glass and often easier to process. This can be useful if special cut-outs are needed or if a large cover should weigh as little as possible. For custom sizes, unusual tank shapes, or technical cable routing, plastic is therefore a practical option.
The disadvantage: Some plastics can slightly deform over time due to heat and high humidity. Acrylic glass is also more prone to scratches than glass. For an aquarium with very warm lighting or a closed cover for a longer period, sufficient material thickness and secure support are therefore important. Thin craft sheets are rarely a permanent solution for large spans.
Polycarbonate is impact-resistant and interesting for special applications, but depending on the surface and care, it can also show signs of wear more quickly. Those looking for a clear, durable, and easy-to-clean cover are often better off with glass for standard tanks.
Complete cover: if light and technology are to be integrated
A complete aquarium cover usually consists of a frame, flaps, and integrated or retrofittable lighting. It is useful if a tank should appear closed, jumping fish are kept, or the lighting must sit securely above the water. Especially in family aquariums, a complete cover offers clear protection against unintentional interference and reduces dust ingress.
Compared to a simple glass pane, however, it is more dependent on the specific tank model. Dimensions, support points, cut-outs for external filters, and the position of the lights must match. When selecting, it should therefore be checked whether the cover is intended for the existing aquarium or whether a custom-made solution is more appropriate.
For open design tanks, paludariums, or aquariums with elaborate hardscape, a classic complete cover may be less suitable visually. Here, precisely fitting glass or plastic panes are often the more discreet choice.
The right size determines the effect
A too-small pane leaves wide open areas. A too-large pane can get stuck, rest on cables, or become unwieldy when removed. For aquariums with a central brace, two separate cover panes must be planned. For long tanks, several segments are also useful because they facilitate maintenance and limit the weight per pane.
Before ordering, measure the length and depth of the usable support surface. Also consider internal filters, intake pipes, outlet pipes, CO2 hoses, heating cables, and auto feeders. A well-planned cut-out is better than a permanently raised pane: even a narrow gap can significantly reduce the anti-evaporation effect.
For special formats - such as panorama aquariums, Kallax tanks, shallow photo tanks, or custom-made aquariums - a custom-made cover is worthwhile. It sensibly encloses the water surface without compromising design, accessibility, or technology.
Do not underestimate ventilation and heat
A nearly closed cover retains not only moisture but also heat in the aquarium. In winter, this can slightly reduce heating requirements. In summer, the situation can reverse: in warm rooms, with closed windows and strong LED lighting, the water temperature under a tight cover rises faster.
In this case, small, deliberately placed openings or a partially shifted pane can help. On very warm days, it may be useful to open the cover wider temporarily and closely monitor the temperature. This applies particularly to aquariums with species that require cooling.
Gas exchange primarily occurs at the water surface. A cover is therefore no reason to completely switch off surface movement. The filter outlet should continue to provide slight movement without splashing the water excessively. This maintains oxygen input while significantly reducing evaporation compared to a completely open aquarium.
Lighting, plants and condensation
With resting cover panes, the lighting is usually positioned above the glass. This protects lights from splashing water, but condensation and lime scale can reduce some light. For a normally planted aquarium, regular wiping is usually sufficient. In a heavily planted tank with demanding carpeting plants, the light intensity should be observed after placing the panes.
Also pay attention to the lighting's approvals. Not every light is designed for operation directly above a closed cover, as heat can build up. Sufficient distance and air circulation above the pane extend the lifespan of the equipment.
For emersed growing plants, open Wabi-Kusa-like setups or paludariums, high humidity is often desired. There, a partially closed cover can create the right balance. The plants benefit from moist air, while the aquarium is not completely hermetically sealed.
Safety for fish, shrimp and in the household
In addition to evaporation, escape protection is an important reason for a cover. Killifish, dwarf cichlids, many barbs, rainbowfish, and some catfish species can jump. Shrimp also occasionally get out of the aquarium via cables or filter technology. A cover that is as closed as possible significantly reduces this risk.
However, the tank should still not be completely sealed. Cable and hose feed-throughs need space, and feeding flaps or sliding elements make daily care easier. The key is that no gaps remain large enough for animals to pass through.
In households with children or pets, a sturdy cover offers additional protection. It should rest securely and not just loosely balance on narrow glass edges. Large panes are best removed with both hands and placed on a soft, clean surface.
Planning the right cover for every aquarium
For a standard tank with an external filter, a divided glass cover with suitable cut-outs is usually the simplest and most durable solution. For light special constructions or complex cut-outs, a sufficiently strong plastic sheet can be useful. If lighting, protection, and a closed look are to be combined in one system, a suitable complete cover is the right direction.
