Which Substrate for a Planted Aquarium Suits Your Goal?
The most important counter-question is not which substrate is generally the best. What matters is what you intend to do with the tank. A heavily planted aquascape with CO2, plenty of light, and demanding stem plants has different requirements than an easy-to-maintain community tank with predominantly epiphytic plants and few root feeders.
Precisely for this reason, there isn't one right substrate for everyone. Soil provides nutrients and often affects water parameters. Gravel is stable, uncomplicated, and available in many grain sizes. Sand looks calm and natural but is not the first choice for every plant setup.
Soil – Often the First Choice for Many Planted Aquariums
Active soils are particularly popular for planted aquariums because they fulfill several tasks simultaneously. They serve as a plant substrate, already contain nutrients depending on the product, and can make the water softer and slightly more acidic. This is an advantage especially for many aquarium plants and numerous scaping layouts.

Gravel is so widespread in everyday aquaristics because it is predictable. It generally has little influence on water parameters, can be chosen in many colors and grain sizes, and works in very different tank types. For many beginners, this is a real advantage.
For a planted aquarium, gravel is interesting if the grain size is right. Too coarse gravel may look neat, but it is often unfavorable for fine roots. On the other hand, too dense, unsuitable gravel can impede water flow in the substrate. The main issue with sand is compaction. Very fine sand leaves little space in the substrate, which can make root development more challenging. Many plants still grow in it, especially undemanding species. However, for strongly rooting and nutrient-hungry plants, sand alone is usually not the most comfortable solution.
Furthermore, nutrients are not naturally present in sand. If you want to use many rosette plants, ground covers, and strong root feeders, you need a different substrate than someone with mosses, ferns, and epiphytes.
Root feeders clearly benefit from nutrient-rich soil or targeted depot fertilization. Epiphytic plants are much more relaxed about the substrate. They can therefore also be kept very easily in tanks with gravel or sand. So, if you want an easy-care plant display, you don't automatically have to opt for soil.
The Right Height and Grain Size

For beginners who want an uncomplicated, permanently stable tank, fine to medium gravel with appropriate nutrient supply is often the safest choice. Which Substrate for a Planted Aquarium with Low Maintenance?
If maintenance is to remain low, a neutral, easily plantable gravel is often the most sensible solution. It is durable, tolerates fluctuations better, and can be specifically fertilized if needed. While soil can deliver excellent results, it often requires more attention, especially in the first few weeks.
With sand, much depends on the choice of plants. For reduced plant sets with many epiphytes, this can be very relaxed. For a dense plant display with strong root growth, sand is usually the more laborious solution in the long run.
The Practical Decision Aid
If you plan a demanding planted aquarium with a high proportion of green and a clean scape, soil is usually the strongest foundation. If you want an everyday planted tank with good stability and controllable costs, gravel is very often the best choice.
