How much does an aquarium weigh? The quick rule of thumb
In practice: 1 liter of water weighs approximately 1 kilogram. A 100-liter aquarium, therefore, weighs around 100 kilograms with water alone. However, the glass itself, substrate, hardscape, technology, and often the base cabinet are added to this. What appears to be a compact tank quickly becomes a load that is relevant for furniture, floor space, and transport.
As a rough guide, one can say: A fully furnished aquarium often weighs significantly more than its nominal volume in kilograms. Substrate adds about 10 to 15 kilograms, and stones and roots another 10 to 25 kilograms. This quickly brings the total weight to 160 to 190 kilograms – without a large safety margin.
For a 240-liter tank, it becomes even clearer. 240 kilograms of water plus about 40 to 60 kilograms of glass, plus substrate and hardscape – you quickly end up in the range of 300 kilograms or more. Those who work with heavy rocks can easily exceed this mark.
